I loves me the thrift stores. A Underwood 315 of late vintage, made in Spain when "Underwood" really meant "Olivetti". Shot was too blurry, so I overdid the unsharp mask in Gimp for a posterizing effect.

Previous owner bought it from a Sacramento junkyard in the 1960's for $8 and refurbished it. He repaired adding machines when he was in the service, so the innards of a fine machine like this did not scare him. This machine features &qu...

On the inside, it's a different story. Did "fancy" equate to "well-made" in the early 20th century? There's no functional reason for all this detail, especially considering that it's behind the ...

A class act all around. A lovely machine, and a fine typer.

Serial number 122121. Comparing features to lists online, this was made between 1945 and 1949. Except for some minor surface issues, an excellent thrift-store bargain.

Removing the platen from a late-model Underwood:

1) Collect your patient. This is Norma Jean, my 1960s era Underwood Touchmaster, an office machine. The platen was meant to be removable for ease of cleaning.

2) Either end of the platen is held...

The Left Bank restaurant in downtown Pleasant Hill. Some problems with the negative, as this was my first success at getting 120 film on 620 spools.

From a church thrift sale, purchased for $1. It's worth about that, too. But what a classy hunk of hardware! This is a *heavy* camera, but luckily you have to stop to wind it frequently. The manual points out (in all caps) IT TAKES ABOUT ...

Here's the other part of the advance. The chain slips around this gear, which turns a shaft that connects to the reels. I had to thread this on with the handle of one of my dusting paintbrushes, then work it back over the tension wheels. N...

Taken from a cheap thrift-store 35mm camera, converted to a pinhole. Placed on my desk to keep the camera from shaking. See photo notes for excuses.

Another box camera of the TLR styling. Several models of Duaflex existed, this one is actually focusable by the apeture settings beneath the bottom lens. The edge of the lens is marked with focus distances, but I don't think they do anythin...

The morning sky, shot from my back patio around 7am with a vintage Argus C3 "brick" 35mm camera. This is really fog from San Francisco Bay burning off.

Great-grandfather's watch. A very plain, functional Hamilton watch on the outside. Model 992, made in 1913.

The only photo I had to retouch slightly: I was using Sunny 16 to gauge exposure, and this one came out a little flat, so I punched up the contrast a bit in Gimp.
